7485 IC 4-Bit Magnitude Comparator DIP-16

The IC 7485 is a 4-bit magnitude comparator that evaluates the relationship between two 4-bit binary numbers, labeled A (A0–A3) and B (B0–B3). It compares the two inputs and outputs three signals: A > B, A = B, and A < B, each indicating the result of the comparison.

The device also features cascading inputs and outputs, allowing designers to connect multiple 7485s together to compare numbers larger than 4 bits. You can chain them to create 8-bit, 12-bit, or even 16-bit comparators by feeding the cascading outputs of one IC into the cascading inputs of the next.

This IC supports high-speed logic-level comparisons and integrates seamlessly with other TTL components. It eliminates the need for extra logic gates when comparing binary values in digital circuits.

Key Features

  • Compares two 4-bit binary values

  • Outputs signals for A > B, A = B, and A < B

  • Includes cascading inputs and outputs for multi-bit comparison

  • Fast response time with TTL-level compatibility

  • Works reliably with 5V logic systems

  • Packaged in standard 16-pin DIP or SOIC formats

  • Simple interface with microprocessors and control units

Applications

  1. Compare binary values in digital control systems

  2. Build 8-bit or higher comparators using cascading

  3. Determine priority in binary-coded decision logic

  4. Implement sorting logic in embedded systems

  5. Use in memory address comparators

  6. Create digital selectors based on value comparison

  7. Detect matching or mismatching digital signals

  8. Perform conditional branching in hardware logic

  9. Compare counter outputs in automation circuits

  10. Teach binary comparison in digital electronics labs
