7442 IC BCD to Decimal Decoder

The IC 7442 is a BCD (Binary-Coded Decimal) to Decimal Decoder. It accepts a 4-bit binary input and activates one of ten outputs by pulling it LOW while keeping all others HIGH. Each output corresponds to a specific decimal value from 0 to 9. Inputs representing binary values from 10 to 15 produce no valid output (all outputs remain HIGH).

You can use the 7442 to select devices, drive digit displays, or control timing events in a sequential system. The IC outputs active-LOW signals, so you can connect it to LEDs, relays, or other circuits that need a LOW signal to activate.

Its TTL-compatible logic makes it easy to integrate with other 7400-series components. With open-collector-style logic levels, it fits well in multiplexed control, digital counters, and microcontroller interfacing.

Key Features

  • Decodes 4-bit binary (BCD) input to 1-of-10 outputs

  • Provides active-LOW outputs (one LOW at a time)

  • Drives up to 10 loads individually

  • Rejects invalid inputs (1010 to 1111 – all outputs stay HIGH)

  • Compatible with TTL voltage levels

  • Easy to interface with microprocessors and counters

  • Available in DIP-16 or SOIC-16 packages

 Applications

  1. Select one of ten devices using a 4-bit control signal.

  2. Drive a single output line in display or lighting systems.

  3. Control numeric indicators or LED digit drivers.

  4. Use it in combination with counters for timing sequences.

  5. Build simple digital control panels or selection logic.

  6. Activate alarms or buzzers based on binary-coded input.

  7. Create state-based controllers in digital systems.

  8. Build test systems with switchable outputs for diagnostics.

  9. Interface directly with microcontrollers or other logic chips.

  10. Implement logic decoding in educational circuits.
