The 7438 IC features four 2-input NAND gates with open-collector outputs and high current sinking capability. It fits into a standard 14-pin DIP or SOIC package. Each output acts like a switch to ground and requires a pull-up resistor to define a HIGH logic level. These open-collector outputs allow the IC to connect directly to external loads or higher voltage rails—up to 30V.
