74190 IC Up/Down BCD Decade Counter

The IC 74190 is a synchronous 4-bit BCD (Binary-Coded Decimal) up/down counter that counts from 0000 (0) to 1001 (9) in either direction, depending on the Up/Down control input.

It features a parallel load (LOAD) input that allows presetting any initial value within the valid BCD range. When LOAD is active, the counter ignores clock pulses and loads the parallel data instead.

The synchronous operation ensures that all bits change state simultaneously on the clock edge, avoiding glitches. It includes carry (TCU) and borrow (TCD) outputs, enabling counters to be cascaded for multi-decade counting sequences.

With TTL logic compatibility and fast switching characteristics, the 74190 is used in digital clocks, frequency dividers, event counters, and numerical display systems.
