74163 IC Synchronous 4-Bit Binary Counter

The IC 74163 is a synchronous 4-bit binary counter that counts from 0000 (0) to 1111 (15). Unlike the 74161, the clear input is synchronous, meaning it resets the counter only on the next active clock edge instead of immediately.

It includes a parallel load (LOAD) input to preset any starting count, and enable inputs (ENP and ENT) to control counting. A terminal count output (TC) indicates when the counter reaches its maximum value (15), allowing cascading for larger counting ranges.

Because all outputs change simultaneously on the clock edge, the 74163 avoids the ripple delays found in asynchronous counters. Its TTL compatibility and high-speed design make it suitable for digital clocks, frequency dividers, event counters, and sequencing circuits.
